A Major Advance for Podiatrists

From July 1, 2024, prescriptions for therapeutic shoes (CHUP and CHUT) made by chiropodists will finally be reimbursed by health insurance.

What are CHUP and CHUT?

Standard therapeutic shoes are divided into two categories:

  • CHUP (Extended Use Shoes) : These are shoes designed for patients requiring specific long-term adaptation. They are often used for chronic pathologies or significant deformations of the foot.
  • CHUT (Temporary Use Shoes) : These are intended for temporary use, for example during the post-operative rehabilitation phase or in the event of injuries requiring occasional correction.

These shoes are manufactured to provide optimal comfort and support to patients' feet, while taking into account their specific medical needs.

Important Information!

We received a notification from the Ministry of Health and Prevention this Friday, in response to the numerous requests from the National Order of Chiropodists-Podiatrists (ONPP) and supported by the National Federation of Podiatrists (FNP). The Social Security Directorate (DSS) has sent an instruction to the health insurance services stipulating that, from July 1, prescriptions for standard therapeutic shoes will be covered according to the conditions defined by the decree of April 24, 2020 (Paragraph 8 of R4322-1).

What Changes

This new directive will be implemented even before the publication of a new decree, and will then be integrated into the regulatory framework. In practice, this means that from 1 July 2024, chiropodists will be able to prescribe therapeutic shoes that will be reimbursed by health insurance.

Anticipate Implementation Delays

Although this measure will come into force on July 1, it is likely that some time will be needed for the Primary Health Insurance Funds (CPAM) to fully integrate this new provision.

Conclusion

This advancement represents a major step forward for our profession and for the well-being of our patients. We will keep you informed of any updates regarding this measure.
